Introduction

Conceived in the northern Chultan city of Port Nyanzaru, Saveed is the bastard son of a wealthy Chultan merchant and a Calishite noblewoman from Amn. Being born of a brief affair, and a mother not interested in raising a child, a baby Saveed is dropped off at an orphanage in Keczulla, where he is given his name and brought up through his teen years.

Even while very young, it’s evident early on that Saveed is not a sociable child, or one to make friends. There is a coldness to his demeanor. He is detached and distant. But he is also driven. Unlike many of the other children who grow up in the orphanages, Saveed strives to learn to read and become educated. He takes advantage of every resource possible. But with little opportunities available to him, he faces the poverty of the streets just as most of his fellow orphans do.

Embittered but ambitious, a teenage Saveed pursues work in whatever way he can, and ultimately ends up finding a job in Keczulla’s renowned gem mines. Working long hours mining for gold and other precious gemstones, it’s a physically taxing and exhausting job, but one that consequently makes him muscular and strong.
